Q1: I am a student looking for funding. Can I apply for a grant or bursary? (Mary Datchelor Trust)

No. We do not fund students. You may be enquiring about the Mary Datchelor Trust, which used to operate from The Clothworkers' Foundation making grants to students but no longer exists.

Q2: I am an individual looking for funding (for a new business, medical equipment etc). Can I apply?

No. We do not fund individuals under any circumstances.

Q3: Do you fund salaries/rent/training/events or project costs?

Q4: What do you mean by capital projects?

Q5: My organisation is not a charity. It is a church/ Community Interest Company etc. Can we still apply?

Your organisation may still apply but must demonstrate its not for profit status. We do not fund Religious Institutions unless the project is open to all and does not involve the advancement of any particular faith. We do not fund Companies Limited by Guarantee (unless they are also a charity/CIC etc)

Q6: Do you fund schools for children with disabilities and/or special educational needs?

Yes. This is the only type of educational establishment we will fund. Please apply in the normal way.

Q7: Will you fund my project working overseas? My organisation is registered in the UK.

We do not fund any overseas work, even if your organisation is a UK-registered charity.

Q8: Will you fund an exhibition under the Textiles programme area?

No. We do not fund any events, even exhibitions.

Q9: My organisation does not have a main revenue funder. Who else can we use as a reference?

You must provide a reference who is independent from your organisation. Trustees/patrons/supporters or any other affiliated parties are not acceptable. The referee should be representing an organisation when providing the referee.

The following are acceptable referees in place of a main revenue funder (in order of priority):

1. A statutory funding body that provides revenue/unrestricted/project funding to your organisation - even if this is not your main funding.
2. A Trust/Foundation/non-governmental funding body that provides revenue/unrestrictive/project funding to your organisation - even if this is not your main funding.
3. A statutory funding body, Trust, Foundation  or other funding body that used to provide revenue/unrestricted/project funding (recently) to your organisation but no longer does.
4. A statutory body that provides/has provided capital funding to your organisation.
5. A Trust/Foundation that provides/has provided capital funding to your organisation.
6. A statutory organisation that you have partnered/worked with (but have not received funding from).
7. Councils/universities/colleges/other voluntary organisations/corporate entities that have provided significant funding.
8. Councils/universities/colleges/other voluntary organisations/corporate entities that you have partnered/worked with (but have not received funding from).

PLEASE NOTE: These options should only be used if you do not have a main revenue funder. Please use a reference from the highest level of fthe list possible and provide an explanation as to why it is not possible to provide the reference requested, or, if you are providing a reference from the latter half of the list provide an explanation as to why the other options were not viable.

GRANT PROGRAMMES

Q1: Which programme can/should I apply to?

Q2: How much can I apply for? Is there a maximum?

Other than as mentioned above, there are no maximum or minimum amounts. For an idea of the range and size of the grants we make please see our News of Recent Grants page.

Q3. What are the deadlines for applications?

There are no deadlines. Both the Main Grants Programme and the Small Grants Programme are rolling programmes which means that you can submit your application at any time.

Q4: How long will it take for a decision to be reached?

Q5: Can I email my application?

No. We only accept applications by post.

Q6. My question has not been answered by the FAQ? Who can I email or call?

We regret that our resources do not allow us to provide general guidance and advice, or to discuss information that is available on our website. It is the responsibility of the applying organisation to decide whether or not a project fits within our guidelines.

IIf you have read all of our guidelines (here, here, here and here) and the FAQ and still have a specific question that is not covered on this site,  then please contact Samantha Grimmett, Grants Assistant, by email: samcgrimmett (at) clothworkers.co.uk, or by phone on 02076237041.

Please note we cannot take calls requesting information that is available on this website. Please do not call requesting general guidance or discussion regarding your project. Similarly, email enquiries which can be answered by the information on this website will not receive replies.

Q1: How will our grant be paid?

By cheque. We cannot pay grants in any other way.

Q2: My organisation has been awarded a grant – when can we expect payment?

Please refer to the requirements set out in your Grant Offer Letter. When these have been met we will pay your grant. If we have delayed payment of our grant, for example whilst you raise further funds, you must notify us when you are ready to start the project.

Q3: We are ready to start but haven’t received a cheque.

Please make sure that you have returned the Grant Offer Declaration, Informed us of your start date, informed us that you are ready to draw down on the funds and met any other conditions we have set.

Q4: I have done all of the above but the cheque is still not here!

Once you have met our payment criteria, a cheque can take up to 6 weeks to arrive. This is why we request the start date of the project on our Grant Offer Declaration (so that we can try to arrange payment on or around the start date). Please be patient.
