Archives

The Clothworkers' Company is fortunate to have preserved its records intact from the foundation of the Company. They are still held at Clothworkers' Hall in a recently-refurbished strong room.

Summary lists of the contents of the archive are deposited at the National Register of Archives and the Guildhall Library.

Enquiries relating to the history of the Company and its archives are normally answered by the Archivist without charge. Please address your enquiry in writing, including as much detail as you can. Please read the information on this website first, in particular the research guides to the archive.

For more detailed or specialist enquiries, the archive may be consulted by bona fide scholars and researchers Monday-Friday, by appointment, at the discretion of the Company. Those wishing to consult the archive should apply in writing to the Archivist, giving details of their research and including a letter of introduction from a third party of suitable standing.

Please note that the archive is a private resource and not all series are available to researchers. All records are normally closed for 30 years; those relating to individuals are closed for 100 years.
