The Clothworkers' Company was set up to promote and control the craft of clothworking within the City of London and its suburbs. It had no remit beyond this area.

Members of the Company are Free of the City of London, which in the past was an essential prerequisite for trading or voting within the City. Members of the Livery still play a role in electing the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs of London.

As the twelfth of the Great Twelve Livery Companies, The Clothworkers' Company is proud to play an active role in City life, through participation in the City's ritual year, by ownership of properties in the Square Mile and in its special relationship with the church of St Olave, Hart Street.
